Geology/Earth Sciences Instructor - Adjunct

Description
Under the general supervision and direction of the Division Dean, Science and Mathematics Division, the primary responsibility of this position is to teach community college level Geology courses. The Science and Mathematics Division includes biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics and electron microscopy.

Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities may include, but not limited to the following:
  • Teach community college level Geology courses such as general geology and physical geology and others are required in conformity with approved outlines.
  • Keep informed relative to the latest developments in the area of Geology/Earth Sciences.
  • Participate in the developmental process of curriculum review and modification.
  • Assist the Division Dean in the preparation of reports, budget, audit information and other required data.
  • Advise and assist students in achieving stated course objectives. Evaluate the progress of each student and notify students in need of counseling service and/or tutorial assistance.
  • Complete various reporting procedures as required for student evaluation, course reporting and budget development.
  • Attend various departmental, divisional and campus-wide activities and events as stipulated.
  • Participate in departmental, divisional and campus-wide committees as part of the shared governance process.
  • Participate in divisional committees as assigned by the Division Dean.
  • Assist in the marketing and promotion of the program by participating in special college sponsored events and by visiting local businesses and schools.
  • Perform other necessary duties which assure the smooth functioning of the Science and Mathematics division, as assigned by the Division Dean and as outlined in Board Policy.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in geology, geophysics, earth sciences, meteorology, oceanography, or paleontology OR Bachelor’s Degree in geology AND Master’s in geography, physics or geochemistry OR the equivalent.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrated teaching experience.
  • Comprehensive course work representing breadth in the geological sciences, including courses from among environmental geology, geophysics, geochemistry, sedimentology, hydrology, tectonics, soils, geomorphology, paleontology, astronomy, microbiology, evolutionary biology, advanced microscopic techniques, and geographic information systems.
  • Demonstrated interest and exemplary teaching experience in the geological sciences, including both large lecture and laboratory instruction.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the appropriate methods and techniques of laboratory instruction, including health and safety precautions.
  • Earned Doctorate in geology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a cooperative manner with staff, students and community college groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population representing a wide range of abilities, ages, nationalities and cultures.
  • Knowledge of the diverse needs and abilities of non-traditional students and familiarity with materials and methods designed to meet their needs.
  • Demonstrated interest in the planning and coordination of laboratory sessions.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting field trips and field studies in applied geology.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in curriculum development.
